Guiding Good Choices Spring 2018 Offerings

We are pleased to announce that we will be offing Guiding Good Choice again in Pasco. We are accepting parent application for our parent classes to start on May 8th in both English and Spanish (please note that we this will be based on parent sign-ups).

Guiding Good Choices is a free 5-week course teaching people how to help reduce the risk of substance abuse in children age 8-14. The goal of the Guiding Good Choices program is to prevent substance abuse among teens by teaching parents of preteens and younger adolescents the skills they need to improve family communication and family bonding. The program draws on extensive research that demonstrates the critical importance of bonding in reducing or inhibiting adolescent participation in antisocial behaviors.During the course of the Guiding Good Choices program, parents will learn specific strategies to help their children avoid drug use and other adolescent problem behaviors, and develop into healthy adults. Parents will learn to set clear family guidelines on drugs, as well as learn and practice skills to strengthen family bonds, help their children develop healthy behaviors, and increase children's involvement in the family.

Volunteer Need - Join us to Canvass Pasco for Our Community Survey

The last couple of years, we have had a canvassing event for the community survey. It has been a good way to get out into the community, and has been one of our volunteers favorite events. Join us This Saturday (10/24/15) from 1:00 PM to 4:30.

We need all of the volunteers we can get. We will be going out in groups to talk to various community members and complete our community survey. We will send everybody out in teams of two or more. They will all be equipped with information regarding the coalition, community surveys, door hangers. We also have some PDC Swag and will have some snacks.

We will be meeting at the Lakeview Community Center and using their facility as our base for the event.

Beyond Consequences: Helping Traumatized Children Heal

Presenter: Heather T. Forbes, LCSW

About the Workshop

You will learn:

  • How exposure to trauma and adversity impact child development, emotional  regulation, and behavior.
  • How to truly connect with even the most difficult and resistant child.
  • The driving force behind  children’s behavior
  • Skills and strategies to help effectively and compassionately work with children impacted by trauma.

About the Presenter

Heather T. Forbes, LCSW is the owner of the Beyond Consequences Institute and the co-founder of the Codega Foundation. Forbes has worked in the field of trauma and healing since 1999.  She is an internationally published author on the topics of raising children with difficult and severe behaviors, the impact of trauma on the developing child, adoptive motherhood, and self-development.  Additionally, Forbes has a heart for children in the classroom and for finding ways to teach the child that seems “unteachable.”  Her signature style is to bridge the gap between scientific research and real-life application to equip parents, educators, and therapists with practical and effective tools.  Much of her experience and insight on understanding trauma, disruptive behaviors, and adoption-related issues comes from her direct mothering experience of her two adopted children.
